I am privileged to be the custodian of Hopward Wood which can be found hidden away on the private Meynell Langley estate on the outskirts of Derby, close to the village of Kirk Langley.
Our Forest School is a magical place that is big enough to explore but small enough to keep the children safe within the confines of the wood. Hopyard is bordered on two sides by fenced fields which are home to cows and sheep and a stream provides the remaining boundary.
The wood caters for both children and adults and lends itself to quiet contemplation or fun & games. We have an abundance of flora and fauna, so it’s great for the exploring and discovering of wild life which inhabits the environment. Look closely and you will find some beautiful fungi or could they be homes for the fairies?
Most of our activities take place in the heart of the wood and close to our camp fire. Our parachute canopy and bell tent provides shelter from the wind and rain or if we are lucky, shade from the sunshine.
Tucked away in the corner of the wood is our popular “loo with a view.” Our treebog is an example of a permaculture design and is a low-tech compost toilet. It consists of a raised platform above a compost pile surrounded by nutrient hungry trees.
Due to the structure of the toilet (pictured) access is via wooden steps & handrail and therefore is not wheelchair friendly.
Hopyard Wood does have its own off road parking in a nearby field which is a short walk away from the wood.
In addition to our forest school, this beautiful woodland space is also available for use by community groups, private parties and corporate events. Enquiries to admin@hopyardwood.co.uk
